When all is said and done, I think I feel most comfortable calling myself an agnostic.

Agnosticism to me is simply the method of science. Believe what the evidence shows. If there is no evidence, then either reject the claim as highly unlikely or reserve judgement until a later time when evidence might be shown.

A very good definintion. Thank you. I have a friend that considers herself Agnostic, and told me that it is not a disbelief, rather a seeker.

I like the definition in the opening post.

I choose to identify as an agnostic because it does imply to me seeking and questioning, continuing to learn and be open to new information. I don't identy as an atheist or theist because it places too much empahsis on the existence (or not) of a deity. My spirituality isn't about that.

Agnosticism is a position of knowledge, not of belief. It states that one cannot know if a god exists or not, mostly based on the lack of evidence. However, the agnostic position doesn't answer the questions of "do you believe in a god?" People who claim to be agnostic when asked that question are simply evading the question.

One either believes in a god or not.

Seems to me there are two types of atheists: those that say there is no God, and those that simply fail to believe in God. Many of those people who fail to believe in God - because for example of a lack of evidence - sometimes prefer not to be called "atheist". Sometimes those people prefer the term "agnostic". I read Huxley and I think he was like that. He once told his wife that nine out of ten of his fellows would call him an atheist..but he prefered 'agnostic'.

Strictly speaking, you are right: you are either an atheist or a theist of some sort. There is no middle ground. Everybody is born an atheist.

Fine with me if that's your interpretation. I don't think it's a question of great importance, so I don't center my spirituality around it. I don't spend a lot of time thinking about if I believe in a lot of gods or entities that some people do believe in. Might be a god, might not be. I don't believe in the God of the Bible, that's for sure.

It really bothers some people that I don't answer if I believe in God or not. That's their issue. I will answer in the words of the Indigo Girls: The less I seek my source for some definitive, the closer I am to fine.

I am not sure I agree that one has to be one or the other; the main reason is because that is what a lot of 'hard core' religions do to attempt to force the issue.

You can divide the universal set into two categories: those who believe in a supernatural god and those who don't. You either believe or you don't.

Do you believe? Yes or no?

There is no other answer. You might say that you think there is a creative force, or that the universe might evolve in complexity and "god" emerges from the universe, but, nonetheless, you have to say that you do not believe in a god right now. You are an atheist.

My dog is an atheist. All babies are atheists.
