More than a decade ago, I converted from Episcopalian to Catholic because I was engaged to marry a devout Catholic. I went through RCIA and was confirmed by the Bishop.
The Catholic fiancee and I broke up. A few years later, I married an Athiest in a very nice Episcopalian wedding. We had our son baptised Episcopalian. Not out of any religious desire for me, but because it was a tradition in my family. We could have skipped the whole thing but my mom was gravely ill and I wanted to make her happy.
Over the years, I became more left-leaning. I'm now an abortion rights advocate and birth control educator. This would definitely get me formally kicked out of the Catholic church, right? (not that I want to be there...)
So I'm curious what religion I am. A Catholic friend said I'm still Catholic, I'm just lapsed. Another Catholic said I was basically kicked out when I started doing abortion-rights work.
My gut feeling says organized religion's all a crock of hooey and God's pissed off that we managed to get it all wrong.
My Athiest husband says what's the big deal, we're all going to die, period. |

If you think organized religion is a crock, then it sounds to me like you don't really have a religion as such. If you believe in god then you are a believer, if you don't then you are a non-believer, and if you aren't sure or don't know, then you are an agnostic.
I think the decision about what religion you are, if any, is up to you -- not the Catholic Church or any other church. Of course, if you were to announce to the Catholic Church that you advocate parental choice and birth control, they'd probably try to distance themselves from you, if not outright excommunicate you.
I basically agree with your husband -- it doesn't really ultimately matter too much what we believe, because we all share the same fate in the end. But it's good to at least not let your beliefs harm others, so to that extent it's worth taking the time to try to figure out what you believe and why, and how that affects others.
Sounds to me like you have taken some positive steps away from organized religion and towards something more realistic and more humane. |

I'll have to accept your challenge, Dawg, although I don't think the hierarchy of the RCC would choose me as their champion!
Unfortunately, this is gonna take a post that is stoverish in length, which means I have to do it at home, which means tomorrow or Saturday.
I swear I'm not wimpin' out, but it just takes too long to post anything longer than 5 lines on this phuqing computer at work.
Ohhh...can I use that word? (Peering around for CW) I've still got PCSD: Post-Coldwater-Stress-Disorder! _________________ "I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I'll go to it laughing." -- Melville |
