Is there life on other planets...somewhere?
Is it possible? Why or Why not?
Is it just human arrogance that we are the only planet in a vast universe with semi-intelligent life? _________________ Merry Meet, Merry Part, Merry Meet Again

I would say that the probability that "life" exists elsewhere in the universe is pretty large.
I would say that the probability that "intelligent life" exists elsewhere in the universe is much less due to the apparent conditions needed for intelligence to eventually evolve on a given planet. But given the size of the universe, I would say it is very possible.
But I don't believe that life exists elsewhere in the universe because of the simple fact that there is no evidence - yet.
When evidence is produced that life exists elsewhere in this universe, then I will believe it.
Of course, if you want to posit a multiverse instead of a single universe, then it's certain that life exists 'elsewhere' and that all possible finite histories really happen - but that is a story for another time, on another board, on another planet in another galaxy far far away........... |

Some of those that today are considered some of the greatest minds, had no evidence, they had a theory...and the desire to keep an open mind to explore the possibilities.
It is easy to say..."no evidence" it is much harder to say, 'let us find the evidence'
At one time, there was 'no evidence' that the world was round...in fact those that considered such where heretics..At one time there was no evidence that anything existed outside this solar system, a fool's folly, some called it...but now in this age we know it is true...
What will future generations judge us by? Our curiosity, or our need for evidence? _________________ Merry Meet, Merry Part, Merry Meet Again

Neither. They will probably judge us more by the condition of the world that we leave them. Have we advanced scientifically/technologically/socially so that their lives are better and the future is bright? Or have we taken steps back: destroyed the environment, let a failing educational system produce idiots, waste money on military debacles abroad, etc. etc. etc......
I am a VERY curious person. I want to know the secrets of the universe(s). I want to know how evolution got its start on this planet. I want to know if we are alone. I want to know if other intelligent civilizations exist. I want to know what came before the Big Bang. I want to know if there are other universes or just this one. I want to know if God exists. I want to know if there is a future existence beyond death. I want to know if we are living in the Matrix. I want to KNOW.
As soon as evidence is produced, then I will BELIEVE. |

Then if that is the case encourage those that seek the evidence rather than scoff their desire to do so. _________________ Merry Meet, Merry Part, Merry Meet Again

Everybody is free to pursue evidence to prove anything they want. But if they make a truth claim, then they better have the evidence to back it up.
It just seems "more wise" to spend the scarce dollar on things that might be possible instead of things that have a tiny probability of being true. |

BWHAAAHAHAAA!!!
Seriously, though, I think it's evolving...(life on this board, I mean, not on other planets...that I know of. None on my beloved Pluto, anyway). _________________ "I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I'll go to it laughing." -- Melville |

Yes, consciousness seems to be slowly stirring to life here.... but we need more people! Invite some more folks to come here, if you know of any who might like to! _________________ "Faith is believing what you know ain't so." - Mark Twain |

Good point, Mr. Avenging Angel. If the universe is spatially infinite, and the uniform and finite properties of matter hold, then there is an exact duplicate of yourself about 10^10^29 meters from here. And in between here and there would be every conceivable form of life.
But the real question is what evidence is there that other intelligent life exists? And the answer is none. Not a shred of evidence.
Except, of course, for the captured alien space craft which the government keeps at Area 51. Not to mention the dead aliens which were picked up from the crashed alien ship at Roswell.
