Thanks, Janicelee! Don't apologize for taking so long to get back to me as I only read your response today.

You explain UU much better than the site I'd visited that time. It probably was just a badly-worded mission statement on the part of that particular church. I'm glad you realized that my questions were sincere and not baiting.

I like the fact that UU's don't "decree" who or what God is. I was taught not to disrespect others' beliefs as a child, but it amazes me how many people -- Christians especially -- love to knock other denominations and faiths as though they have a market on "truth." "I know because I know" isn't a good enough response if someone is using it to put down another's beliefs. That's probably why I often end up taking the same side as the agnostics/atheists on religion boards: if someone puts down religion because they think it's all bunk, that's their opinion and it's fine with me. And they can discriminate between opinion and fact.

But when you get down to [name a church] is not truly Christian because they don't speak in tongues, or because they don't believe the Bible is literal, or because blah blah blah, that's stating opinion as fact. It's not only ridiculous; it's also sad...and dangerous.

Thanks again!

That is why alot of people who can't find a home in mainstream churches become involved with UU churches. Nobody claims to know with an absolute certainty who or what god is. Spirituality to my mind anyway should be a very intimate very personal experience, I don't think you can have that if someone is laying down all these rules about how you have to believe exactly this or else. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Well I'm a wild-n-crazy UU and I may be a liberal, and I have been known to enjoy a latte, however I drive a chevy pickup. I will admit it does tend to stand out in a parking lot that looks like it could be a Toyota Prius dealership. But as long as I park next to the minivans that the lesbian soccer moms drive nobody seems to complain too much.

Filly the honest to god funny thing is that I'm not really stretching the truth all that much. The parking lot at UU services is heavy on toyota Prius's a couple of volvo's a few minivans and my pickup truck. It's honest to goodness the truth.

How's the gas on your pickup?

I've got an SUV because I need the space (not to mention the four wheel drive), but I'm getting killed with the gas prices... obviously...
