Which by the way is a wonderful book! "Woman Buddhist, Buddhist Women"....so since this little temple here is nearly empty, I wanna have my say about how the buddhist still think women are second class citizens and claim that Buddha HIMSELF said so to a woman friend. Buddha is dead friends. He aint a coming back to teach again....So, listen up. It is a whole new world out there from where Buddha was all walking around and leaving his young wife and son alone so He could go out and find His spiritual being. Now, of course, she could not. She had to hang around taking care of their obligations...like babies.... TODAY is a new dawn!!! Women will too have as much say and yes I will stand up to that monk (monkey) and say what I wish about a scripture....Grins..

Anyone wanna join me??

Wow, I didn't realize that about women in this belief system. I am unclear, is this a standard belief now? or is it how it was back then?

I guess I should not be surprised really, aside from some Pagan faiths women in general were/have been placed as second class by the patriarchal control of most religions and belief systems.

It is pushed under the carpet as it is in most faiths and paths. However, it is glaring if you listen to the struggles of women that want to live a life as monks...in meditation and finding peace and enlightenment. How? People do not support them financially as they do the monks. In fact, in the history of buddhism, many nuns were and still are pushed to the side so only the temples filled with monks can survive. So, yes, it is still happening today and not just in eastern countries but right here in usa.

The teaching of the Buddha was clear. He taught to the society in which He was LIVING and was clear that societies and circumstances do and would change.

Enough from me...I get carried away on the issue!

Buddha is not dead or a dead man. Buddha means 'one who is awake' or sang gye which means 'to clear away' and 'to unfold'.

What is cleared away are obscurations--ordinary qualities of mind and what is unfolding are love, compassion, joy and equanimity.

Buddha is enlightened mind, timeless awareness itself. Buddha is wisdom essence. Each and every sentient being has this Buddha essence.

It's true that Buddhism--institutional Buddhism has discriminated against women. In my community, being a woman is considered advantageous. It is considered easier for a woman to recognize emptiness. We have wonderful examples in our sangha of really strong women practitioners.

Rinpoche broke tradition and ordained western women and men as Lamas.

We also have Tara, the female Buddha as a meditational deity. She has a wonderful story. She determined she would always incarnate as female to show how ridiculous it is the idea that one would have to pray to be reborn as a a male in order to be enlightened.

Thanks for your post. I have much to learn, and I feel that Budhism is pretty Spiritual overall. Native American Spiritualism is basically the way I lean...and Budhism has many similarities.

Peace, Love, Mother Earth, etc....it's as though the path is pretty much the same.
