"The Vatican is staging its first ever musical next week, a dramatisation of the life of the Virgin Mary.
Mary of Nazareth, A Story that Goes On features a former Miss Italy contestant in the lead role and music by a composer more famed for scoring exotic B-movies...
The show traces the life story of the Virgin Mary, from her youth to her eventual ascent into heaven and return as a messenger of peace. The producers said the show had used some "poetic licence" to show Mary as a modern woman.
The auditorium has previously hosted classical concerts and performances by singers including Andrea Bocelli.
Pope Benedict is thought unlikely to be present on the opening night next week, but producers from Latin America and the Middle East will be there and are expected to snap up the rights to take the show worldwide.
The libretto has been written by Maria Pia Liotta, a former ballerina who is the artistic director of Francesco Cilea theatre in Reggio Calabria. Ms Liotta's daughter, Alma Manera, a former Miss Italy contestant and noted soprano, will play Mary.
The music has been penned by Stelvio Cipriani, a 70-year-old composer who has written the scores for movies including Piranha Part Two: The Spawning, Black Orgasm and Sex of the Devil."
